No Buyer? New Boat on the way? No Problem!

Owner’s Dilemma
Our Boat breaking team were contacted by an owner recently who had a dilemma. He was about to take ownership of a new boat for his mooring. But his old boat was still there and just wouldn’t sell. The boat had been up for sale for a while through all the usual channels. Our team had even noticed it on Facebook marketplace which is the last chance saloon for most boats we are contacted about. For a 20ft yacht with an outboard engine £200 seemed like a good price. But typically no one wanted to take the boat on.
The owner then decided to speak to us and look at scrapping the boat. As the boat was in Port Solent marina it was a really straightforward process for us. We knew that the marina could move and lift the boat for us. All we would have to do would be turn up with our trailer.
Costs of Disposal
We told the owner to get the mast down prior to collection. This would save him some money as the marina would only charge him for the pleasure. Our boat disposal team even advised him to keep the engine to sell himself. This would mean he could claw back some of our costs of disposal. In the past we have discounted prices to collect down but we obviously can’t offer a full retail discount. As our aim would be to try and sell the engine ourselves. So by the owner selling he should hopefully get more for it.
Within a week of the owner asking for the boat to be scrapped she was collected. This meant that the owner now had a free mooring for his incoming new boat. Owners can often feel trapped in their situation with an old boat. They hope it will sell but all the time it doesn’t the storage costs continue to accumulate. The scrap option breaks this cycle and gives the owner a solution. It also doesn’t take anywhere near as long as trying to sell. It’s one last bill to pay and then you’re out of the trap.

Luke completed a journalism degree in Brighton University and fortunately for us uses this in his communications, Facebook posts, Tweets and emails to tell all our enquirers and followers what we are up to. Without Luke we would be lost, he runs the office, keeps us organised and is like a terrier and never lets a tricky boat disposal job go un-photographed or Tweeted about.
He also manages all of our enquiries passing them to whoever in the team is the best suited to deal with it. We are teaching Luke how to drive a motorboat or sail a yacht so while he’s learning we suggest you keep out of the Solent!
When he’s not at work he’s a massive football fan (his Dad used to play for Portsmouth FC years ago) and seems to know everything there is to know about any player, anywhere. Next time you ring and he answers, think of a tricky football trivia question and ask him
